What does Idris mean?
Traditionally linked by Arabic sources to the root d-r-s (د-ر-س, 'to study, to learn'), giving 'studious, learned'; another old interpretation is 'interpreter'. Many scholars regard the ultimate origin as non-Arabic, since Idris is the Quranic prophet traditionally identified with the Biblical Enoch. The meaning is therefore disputed.
What does Yahya mean?
The Arabic name of the prophet John the Baptist, Yahya. Traditionally associated with the root h-y-y (ح-ي-ي, 'to live'), read as 'he lives' or 'shall live', although as a prophet's name its ultimate origin is debated and linked to the Hebrew Yohanan. Hedged accordingly.
