What does Tariq mean?
From the root t-r-q (ط-ر-ق, 'to knock, to come by night'), meaning 'one who knocks or arrives at night, night-visitor'. By extension it denotes the bright night/morning star; Surah at-Tariq is named for it. Borne by the commander Tariq ibn Ziyad (Gibraltar = Jabal Tariq).
What does Yahya mean?
The Arabic name of the prophet John the Baptist, Yahya. Traditionally associated with the root h-y-y (ح-ي-ي, 'to live'), read as 'he lives' or 'shall live', although as a prophet's name its ultimate origin is debated and linked to the Hebrew Yohanan. Hedged accordingly.
